I have been seeing the same thing with the full version of VMware Workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769 on Ubuntu 13.04. I did find this post http://communities.vmware.com/thread/446092?start=0&tstart=0 which basically says launch VMware as root. So if you open a terminal and type 'sudo vmplayer' you should be able to then go into File | Player Preferences and click on Download All Components Now you should see it get past the 30% mark. My guess is that in order to add the proper components to folders you need root access level, it really should have prompted for your password when you ran it as yourself. Once all components have been downloaded and installed quit VMware Player and then launch it as you normally do.
